Yesterday, the Metro board approved finalizing negotiations with the Construction Authority to ensure sufficient funding for the base contract for the Glendora to Montclair project to include the Pomona Station, with an option to build to Montclair as part of the same contract if additional funding is secured. With the commitment by Metro, the project has sufficient funding to extend to Pomona, while we continue to seek the estimated $360 million needed to build to Montclair; this approval comes at a critical time. Later this month the Construction Authority will request new bids from the remaining design-build teams competing for the project. The proposed contract will now include the Pomona Station as part of the base project under procurement, and the final cost will be known when bids are received in May. The ability to phase construction of the line is currently undergoing environmental review.

Metro Directors County Supervisor Hilda Solis and Duarte Mayor John Fasana provided leadership in ensuring the first phase of construction has sufficient funding to include Pomona; as well as Metro CEO Phil Washington and his team that worked diligently over the last many weeks to identify costs that could be reduced, saving the project $133 million.

The Metro action was supported by many officials who wrote letters and attended yesterday’s meeting to speak in support of the item and its importance to commuters and the region. Congresswoman Norma Torres sent staff to the meeting, as did State Senators Connie Leyva and Anthony Portantino and Assembly Members Chris Holden, Blanca Rubio, Freddie Rodriguez and Ed Chau, who collectively signed a letter of support. The Construction Authority Chairman and Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval and Vice Chair and La Verne Councilmember Robin Carder attended the meeting and spoke in support; along with several city council members from the cities of Pomona, Claremont and Montclair and a group of key stakeholders. Each expressed the need to get to Pomona, but also to finish the project to Claremont and Montclair as soon as possible.
